I came to see the Senate as skewed to help conservative senators. The first wave of Black Lives Matter protests started going on, and the Ferguson police officer [who killed Michael Brown] was acquitted. I happened to walk into a protest and a woman was carrying a sign saying “The system isn’t broken, it’s fixed.” I was thinking about what I’d been reading, and it seemed to refer to this higher political system as well — the reason the Occupy Movement couldn’t get anywhere, or Bernie Sanders couldn’t get much steam or was suppressed by the Democratic Party itself.
