Throughout my career I have also experienced instances of purposeful misgendering meant to hurt or embarrass me. Recently, I was working a fashion event that featured a red carpet. A male photographer who is also often at these events was there too, and we were positioned next to one another as we were capturing the celebrities entering the event. Repeatedly he shouted to the talent, “Ok, now next to him,” which is a common way to get a celebrity’s attention for a shot when you’re in a sea of lenses. However, I have told this photographer multiple times over the years that I prefer female pronouns. He refuses to give me that respect.
